We visited the glamorous world of Odaiba and found ourselves in a retro fantasy universe

Of course, Tokyo is so much more than just Shibuya, Akihabara and Harajuku. If you want to experience more than the normal tourists, you have to go to places that are less known but still no less exciting. Such as Odaiba, the artificial island in the Bay of Tokyo, which is valued by local residents as a popular entertainment and shopping area.

Before 1996, Odaiba was a pure business district. The Japanese economy was at its peak and the island was to become the model of futuristic life. Overall, the construction of the island cost over 10 Billion Dollar. But the bubble burst in 1991. The Japanese called this event “Kakaku Hakai”. The island was largely deserted until 1995.

After the renovation, Odaiba became a thriving entertainment and shopping center with all kinds of restaurants, shops and amusement arcades. A huge Gundam statue watches over the visitors, who usually arrive in the evening. There are manga and collectible figures everywhere, you can drink and eat and chill and shop. Odaiba is a colorful fun paradise that Tokyo visitors should not miss.
