Cancer? Gone! AIDS? Gone! Zika virus? Gone! Whatever strange disease that wants to crawl out onto the earth’s surface next? Gone! That’s what Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan want to achieve at least. Both of them just announced that they would invest $3 billion over the next decade to cure, prevent and manage all diseases in our children’s lifetime.
“Together we can cure disease by the end of the century“, Mark tells us. “The science initiative is a long-term effort. We plan to invest billions of dollars over decades. But it will take years for these tools to be developed and longer to put them into full use. This is hard and we need to be patient, but it’s important. This is about the future we want for our daughter and children everywhere.”
“Together, we have a real shot at leaving the world a better place for our children than we found it”, Mark continues. “We want every child to grow up in a better world. Our hopes for the future center on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality. We’ll focus first on personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. We will make long-term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years because our greatest challenges require time to solve.” I mean… that’s a good thing… right?
