Today’s Teenagers Are Smoking And Drinking Less Than Their Parents Did

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. Here are the results from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. It seems that our generation gets more boring every year. Snapchat, Instagram & Co. transformed us into well-behaved zombies who have only one goal: Looking good on social media. The new study shows: Today’s teenagers are smoking and drinking less than their parents did.

„Among adolescents aged 12 to 17 in 2015, 1.0 million smoked cigarettes in the past month“, the study claims. „This number represents 4.2 percent adolescents who were current cigarette smokers. The percentage of adolescents who were past month cigarette smokers declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 (or about 1 in 8 adolescents) to 4.2 percent in 2015 (or fewer than 1 in 20). The percentage of adolescents who were current cigarette smokers in 2015 also was lower than the percentages in each year from 2002 to 2014.“

And: „The percentage of adolescents aged 12 to 17 who were current alcohol users was 9.6 percent in 2015, which corresponds to 2.4 million adolescents in 2015 who drank alcohol in the past month. The percentage of adolescents who were current alcohol users in 2015 was lower than the percentages in 2002 through 2014. Although the estimate of current alcohol use among adolescents decreased between 2002 and 2015, about 1 in 10 adolescents aged 12 to 17 were current alcohol users in 2015.“

Only marijuana seems still to be cool: „In 2015, 7.0 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 were current users of marijuana. This means that approximately 1.8 million adolescents used marijuana in the past month. The percentage of adolescents in 2015 who were current marijuana users was similar to the percentages in most years between 2004 and 2014.“

That means: If you want to be as cool and hip and… fly… as our beloved millenials, stop drinking, stop smoking, and buy some sweet weed instead of that red sports car you’re dreaming about since your midlife crisis and the divorce from your wife Linda. Or… maybe Smirnoff, Beck’s & Co. have to work harder to get those Snapchat zombies back on track, I dont’ know…
