I envy people who have enough time to play video games as if there’s no tomorrow. A few rounds of “Counter-Strike” here, some in-depth experience of “The Witcher 3” there, garnished with a quick walk to catch some colourful creatures in “Pokémon GO,” beat the high scores in “Bejeweled,” “Clash of Clans,” and “Fallout Shelter,” and complete the day with some raids in “World of Warcraft.”
If you love video games in all its glory, there’s one place to be, every summer: Cologne. At gamescom, our mostly boring world turns into a exciting, loud, and bright universe, full of magical beings, new adventures, and free minds. Retro meets blockbuster, handheld meets console, fairy meets space marine. It’s a fake world, yes, sure, but it’s definitely the better one. Definitely.
We wandered through pink forests with cute maids and strange beasts, immersed into virtual realities and faraway battlefields, and met the ghosts of our childhood, once again. Yes, gamescom is an exotic realm that devours everyone entering, turning him, her or it into a knight, a fighter, the last hope on earth. A friend, a foe. Or sometimes even both. I envy these people. I envy real gamers.
