British Prime Minister David Cameron just stepped down after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Tearful David, with his wife by his side, made the announcement in a statement outside Downing Street after the final result was announced. He said he would attempt to “steady the ship” over the coming weeks and months.
David Cameron campaigned to remain in the European Union but the public rejected his arguments and chose to leave the EU by 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent. Speaking to reporters outside Downing Street, David said a new leader would be in place by the Tory party conference in October. Meanwhile, the European Pound crashes to its lowest levels in 31 years.
“The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected,” David said while giving a press conference. He called it “an instruction that must be delivered” as also thanked his supporters and congratulated Leave campaigners for their “spirited and passionate case.” Wow. The Prime Minister said he had fought “head, heart and soul” to stay in the union but that it was not right for him to be the “captain” when negotiations to leave the EU begin. Bye, David.
