Every year, Monocle Magazine chooses the world’s most liveable city, and in 2016 it’s, once again, Tokyo. Because of its safety, of its quality of life, of its various offerings. The city of 13 million nurtures a balance of hi-tech efficiency and traditional neighbourhood values – and it’s a combination that wins the Japanese capital the top spot for a second year running.
Here are the Top 25 in the right order. 1: Tokyo. 2: Berlin. 3: Vienna. 4: Copenhagen. 5: Munich. 6: Melbourne. 7: Fukuoka. 8: Sydney. 9: Kyoto. 10: Stockholm. 11: Vancouver. 12: Helsinki. 13: Zürich. 14: Madrid. 15: Hamburg. 16: Lisbon. 17: Düsseldorf. 18: Hong Kong. 19: Barcelona. 20: Singapore. 21: Amsterdam. 22: Auckland. 23: Honolulu. And, finally, 25: Montreal.
Tokyo is both the capital and most populous city of Japan. And the Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It’s the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Monocle Magazine‘s film focuses on Tokyo‘s nocturnal delights, from sunset sports to the public-transport system, restaurants to late-night shopping. What a great city!
