You may remember 5 Centimeters Per Second as one of those heartbreaking gems you could watch over and over and cry again, every fucking single time. Makoto Shinkai’s anime movie from 2007 may not be the perfect film, but it’s one I think about once in a while, mainly because of the quite special feelings it has to offer. And Makoto’s next project wants to carry this feeling to extremes.
In Your Name, or Kimi no na wa, popular high school student Taki from Tokyo and life-hating hayseed Mitsuha begin to see each others memories following a meteor shower and come to the realization that their spirits are drifting into each other’s bodies when they dream. A bond begins to form between the two, although they’ve never met even once.
Your Name is set to be released this summer in theaters across Japan and the trailer gives you a glimpse of what’s waiting for you. If you liked 5 Centimeters Per Second chances are you’ll fell in love with Your Name in a heartbeat. “In my next life, let me be a handsome boy living in Tokyo,” Mitsuha cries out while standing under a shrine’s tori gate at night. And I can feel her.
