When it comes to Japanese pop music, Utada Hikaru is my personal queen. I own every one of her albums, singles, and remixes. Tracks like Final Distance, Goodbye Happiness and Deep River are on my list of all time favorites, I would have given everything to see her live, once, somewhere, anywhere. But a couple of years ago she just disappeared…
Now Utada Hikaru, the official queen of my Japanese heart, is back, with two songs. Both are theme songs for Japanese TV shows. The first one is called Hanataba Wo Kimini, and it’s the theme song of NHK’s morning drama Toto Nē-chan. And the second is called Manatsu No Tooriame, and it’s the theme song of NTV’s news program NEWS ZERO.
Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what the second track sounds like, but a hardworking YouTuber uploaded the intro of Toto Nē-chan – and it’s like coming home. You can buy both songs on April 15. Bear lover Utada Hikaru makes songs so idyllic but not cheesy, so fresh but not embarrassing, so cozy but not boring. I can’t wait to hear the rest of what she has planned for us. Maybe a new album, a new tour, a new Hikki? But no matter what, Utada will be always my personal queen of J-Pop. Always.
