Hanami, the traditional flower festival, is around the corner in Japan. And to celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossom, also known as sakura, Nike released a new Air Max 1 that sees a subtle white leather mudguard and Swoosh accented by a water color-esque array of cherry blossom graphics throughout to reference Japan’s transient love with flowers.
From the end of March to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan. The practice of hanami is many centuries old. Today thousands of people fill the parks to hold feasts under the flowering trees, and sometimes these parties go on until late at night. In more than half of Japan, the cherry blossoming days come at the same time as the beginning of school and work after vacation.
So, if you don’t have the money to visit Japan to celebrate hanami with more or less drunk Japanese people, then maybe it’s enough for you to wear a small sakura tribute on your feet. You can buy the cherry blossom Air Max 1 for around $85 on Nike’s website or at your trusted sneakers store. Wherever that may be. Perhaps just around the corner. Who knows.
