I love my Game Boy. Not so much as my Super Nintendo though, but when I think about the countless hours I spent sitting in front of my grey little friend, playing classics like Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda – Link’s Awakening or, yes, Tetris, I fall into a nostalgic hole no modern game console can fill. For example: I’m a huge fan of my PS Vita, but there are only a handful of good games available. On the other side: I’m also a huge fan of the Nintendo 3DS – but, to be honest, I don’t need two screens at once. It’s just that simple.
German designer Florian Renner seems to be a huge Game Boy nerd himself, so he decided to give Nintendo’s first handheld console a long overdue makeover, creating the GAME BOY 1up. “The project target was to keep the catchy elements of the original and adapt them to the functions and requirements of current games”, Florian tells us.
There are many attempts of ambitious designers when it comes to redesigns of old or current projects and too often I say to myself: Yeah, nice, but no. Florian accomplished to create something which I would really love to buy and use. I actually want Nintendo to build this, with a great screen, great buttons, great weight, call it Game Boy 2 or whatever and I’d be happy. Really happy.
