As a huge fan of Mian Mian’s novels “La la la”, “Candy” and “Panda Sex”, I was always curious about China’s youth and their opinion about censorship while celebrating life with sex, drugs and love in general. Chinese photographer Ren Hang turns Mian Mian’s written adventures and its actors into real people, with rebellious feelings.
Ren Hang is Asia’s radical artist, not afraid of censorship at all. He manages to desexualize naked bodies, making them beautiful and lovely. The models on the photos are his friends, they trust him, and he trusts them. On the rooftops of Beijing, he creates colorful masterpieces, in a country that’s paralyzed by antiquated views.
His photos are forbidden to be shown in Chinese galleries, especially those of naked people. The Chinese government cancels Ren’s shows regularly and sometimes he’s even getting arrested while working. But Ren loves his country. And he still hopes that it’ll open up for new thoughts in the near future. And I hope so, too. Go, China, you can do it!
