Your parents always told you to stay in school, go to college, get a good job at a bank or an insurance company or an ad agency. But they were wrong. Like really, really wrong. Nerdy kids around the world are becoming millionaires right now by playing a computer game called “League of Legends“. Although “game” seems to be the wrong word, it’s more like a religion, especially in South Korea.
VICE host Matt Shea recently went to Seoul to attend the League of Legends world semifinals. What he saw is far from normal. While your little brother sits in his room playing “Destiny” all day long, these kids are professionals in every way. They’re not only the best gamers in the world, they get money, girls and glory – tons and tons of it.
But the sparkling world of bits and bytes is no picnic. Only the best and most reckless players can survive the daily stress of being a video game superstar. More than a few young people land in rehab, after years of wasting their time with digital champions called Morgana, Blitzcrank and Lee Sin. “League of Legends” can turn you into a hero – or destroy your future.
