I know, I know, Lena and Julia weren’t real-life lesbians. They just pretended to like boobies and vaginas to sell their music. Unfortunately. But you know what? I don’t care. When I first saw them on some European music award show, in their red and white school uniforms, kissing each other, I really, really wanted to become a lesbian – even though I was a boy.
Although I wasn’t unfamiliar with the female body back then, I envied folks who were able to experience this somehow forbidden love between a girl and another girl. You know, there’s a sleepover at your BFF’s place and her parents went to bed and you lie there, in your pyjamas, in the same bed, lights off, and then suddenly her hand slips into your Hello Kitty undies and you just let it happen and smile. And then, on the next morning, you’re kind of embarrassed, but also empowered and somehow in love.
“All the Things She Said” was the official anthem of a whole new generation of free love – and it’s kinda sad, that Julia said, she would condemn a gay son. But let’s just forget this terrifying modern world out there, with all its hate and nightmares, and travel back to 2000, when MTV played a rainy video of two Russian teen girls licking each others faces all day long.
