There’s only one thing to brighten your day: By listening to this 30-minute set by Chip Tanaka, that’s Nintendo composer Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka’s amazing alias, which was played at the the Cart Diggers event in Tokyo, hosted by the Red Bull Academy. You may remember the sounds of “Dr. Mario”, “Donkey Kong” and “Metroid”, yes, Hirokazu made them. Awesome!
The event followed on from the release of the Red Bull Music Academy’s Diggin’ In The Carts documentary series, which pays tribute to Japan’s leading composers of video game soundtracks, this night similarly saluted those magnetic soundscapes and playful, robotic melodies that have influenced music makers around the world – and you.
Hirokazu Tanaka’s tracks, from “Tetris”, from “Super Mario Land”, from “EarthBound”, they are still in my head, deep, deep in my head, like, forever! You may like current stars like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez, but you really love Hirokazu, just because of the things he’d done to your mind. Here’s the set, go, blow your mind!
