Since MTV announced to broadcast the cartoon “Popetown”, which was originally produced by the BBC, but was never on air, Germany’s divided. The episodes are about the life of the little pope, who only fools around, and greedy cardinals. The Germany party CDU reported the channel to the police. Nationalwide report all big tv-channels like RTL and ProSieben about the discussion. The church wants MTV to delete “Popetown” from the upcoming program. They say, Christian convictions will be violented by the cartoon. MTV takes a step backwards and wants to show only one episode of “Popetown” as part of a live-discussion in Berlin. Guests will be spokesmen of ecclesiastical organisations and also personalities of the media, the culture scene and viewers. This event will take place at May 3th 2006 at 2130 cet.
In my opinion MTV should be free to broadcast this show and I don’t think, that it violents the Christian belief. And we will see, how funny this show really will be. But one think is clear: This national discussion is the biggest commercial help, which MTV Germany was able to wish.
